The New Year began with an Auction at our Woodlands venue followed by a Club night that included presentations by Phil Shipp, John Edwards, PJ Lasek, Ian Spencer and Robert de Smit.
A visit to Thornbury Philatelic Society included Royal Household Mail and a mixture that included Dutch Christmas Stamps, Bristol Aircraft on Stamps, Filtons Concordes and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. The Nine Page Competition marked by Carlton Jones resulted in winners Phil Shipp Thematics – the History of the SS Great Britain and Postal History – Early Inspectors, Neil Jones General Philately – New Zealand, Ian Spencer – Aerophilately on QANTAS and Cinderellas on Scottish Bus Companies. Both Phil Shipp and Ian Spencer went on to draw for their entries on Revenues Phil with ‘Georgians will Tax Anything’ and Ian on Tasmania.
Roger Martin provided a presentation on Alice in Wonderland – A Philatelic Fantasy – yes definitely!. Carl Varnam presented -An Interesting Mixture which included miss-sent St Helena!, Falklands, Grenada, Cuba, Madagascar, Lady Boats Canada, British Virgin Islands, Albania, Greece, Jamaica – indeed a veritable ‘smorgasbord’. Wilf Vivers provided a presentation on the Falkland Islands from 1872 by the German Cosmos Line mail service and a study into the cork postmarks. Dave Gibbon’s superb presentation on ‘Aspects of Mauritius’ included ‘the Mauritius Shekel’ from the detention camp of Jewish internees
Ahead lie a further 10 meetings for this season. Note the Newport Philatelic Society Zoom Meetings have also afforded truly fascinating entertainment through a wider pool of collectors.
